Moving to NorCal has been an incredible roller coaster. There have been highs (purchasing our first home!) and lows (car getting stolen), but overall it’s been fun, exciting, and majorly eye opening. I can honestly say that in the 4 months I’ve been here, I’ve grown tremendously as a person. Not every lesson learned was an easy one, but with every challenge, and every victory, the Hubs and I have poured a glass of wine, laughed, and embraced our new reality. Attitude is everything in times of uncertainty, but wine definitely helps as well. Here are my top ten everyday wine experiences for moving and exploring a new city.
Sip #1: MOVING DAY! I can’t think of an occasion that calls for wine more than moving day. Generally, it’s the most stressful, and exciting day ever, but once all those boxes are unloaded, and you’re finally alone in your new home, there’s nothing left to do but celebrate. For us, For us, Chateau Ste Michelle Columbia Valley Merlot is the perfect end to a long day of lifting and moving.
Sip #2: Home improvement projects. I’m not sure everyone likes home improvement projects as much as we do but we’ve been busy installing, building, and personalizing our new home. After a long Saturday of hard work around the house, I love to sip a cold glass of chardonnay and admire my work. My most recent project was this pot rack cabinet organizer.
Sip #3: Personalizing our yard. I love to garden, but by the time we got our keys, it was a little late in the season to plant a full on garden. I settled for a few potted herbs with grand plans for next year’s garden. I love to sip while I plant, harvest and dream of recipes to make with my garden haul.
Sip #4: Discovering your local restaurant. The Hubs and I are fortunate to have a quite a few restaurants within walking distance to our house. We’ve already tried quite a few, and I’m always thrilled to see Chateau Ste. Michelle on the wine list.
Sip #5: Successfully navigating public transportation. The Bay Area is the opposite of San Diego when it comes to public transportation. In one day I took an Uber carpool, a ferry, and a train. I went over bridges, through tunnels, and walked many blocks along city streets. The closest I ever came to any of those things in San Diego was riding the Bahia Belle back and forth across Mission Bay. This definitely called for a celebratory sip of Indian Wells Red Blend.
Sip #6: Attending a concert at a new music venue. Seeing live music is one of those things The Hubs and I always say “we should do more often.” Well, we figured since we’re in a new city, adapting to a new way of life, now is the time to make all those things we’ve always wanted to do a reality. Last weekend we checked out The Avett Brothers while enjoying a few sips and a perfect summer-like evening.
Sip #7: Cooking your first meal at home. This is my true joy, and when I feel the most happy and at peace. There is nothing I love more than spending time in my kitchen, sipping a little Chardonnay, listening to music, and concocting delicious treats. The time between move in, and accessible, functional kitchen was not the easiest for me, but the day I was finally able to cook again was truly a celebration.
Sip #8: Hosting friends. We haven’t been able to do this one quite yet, but the day is near when we’re finally able to fire up that grill, invite our friends over, and toast our new life and new home with some Sauvignon Blanc. I have a feeling this is going to be an excellent summer.
Sip #9: Discovering hidden gems. I polled everyone I knew about cool and unique experiences in the Bay Area. So far we’ve found some excellent hiking, scenic beaches, and plenty of dog friendly play areas. New experiences aren’t something to shy away from, they’re for embracing. My favorite weekend activity is exploring a new area, then enjoying lunch and a few sips at an outdoor cafe.
Sip #10: Feeling at home. I know it’s only been 4 months, and I still have a lot of questions, but Oakland is starting to feel like home. When The Hubs and I curl up on the couch at night with a glass of Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and a movie, I realize that home is where your family is, and mine is here.
