Today marks the opening of the San Diego county fair. A nightmare for me since I have to drive into the “eye of the storm” to meet with a client, but fun for the rest of San Diego county who likes that kind of thing. I personally have never been to the fair. I think I would like it. I love me some giant turkey leg and food on a stick, but I hate crowds, so if there’s a day when its “adults only” please let me know.
Last summer I heard people on the radio talking about the strangest food offered at the San Diego county fair. Someone talked about zucchini weenies, which is a hot dog, stuffed inside a zucchini, then battered and deep fried. I thought that was just the funniest thing I had ever heard, and I filed it away in my brain with the intention of getting one if I ever decided to go to the fair. Well I never did go, and now that the fair is here again, I’m not sure I will go this year, so I decided to make them myself!
This was the most fun project I have done in a while! Except for the fear of starting a grease fire, I just had a ball making these (and the accompanying mess)! I hollowed out the zucchini’s using The Hubs’ drill with the largest drill bit I could find. The bit was still skinnier than the weenies, so I had to kind of swirl it around to hollow them out. This pretty much turned the zucchini insides into liquidy pulp, which flew everywhere as the drill bit turned. The drill didn’t go all the way through the zucchini so I had to poke a hole in the other end to allow air to flow while I pushed the weenie in (insert dirty joke from Hubs here). I quickly realized one skewer wouldn’t be strong enough to support this behemoth, so I doubled up on the skewers to avoid it breaking off and splashing hot oil everywhere.
Then I looked up corn dog batter recipes online. I used this one
1 1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cornmeal
4 Tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup milk
Mix all the dry ingredients, then add eggs and milk. Mix till lump free. Dip dogs into the batter to coat.

I fried mine in peanut oil since we always have gallons of it laying around to use in our turkey fryer. They took a bit longer to fry than I thought they would (maybe 12-15 minutes) and my coating was a little sloppy, but they turned out great in the end! I just couldn’t stop laughing as I was shooting these photos. I had so much fun!
