Sure the idea of spring cleaning is kind of contrived. Why can’t you clean during other times of the year? I mean, I do clean other times of the year, and I don’t always “spring clean.” This just happened as a coincidence so I’m rolling with it. I have a lot going on in my life right now. I’m constantly working with new clients in my “money job” as well as working on my own creative endeavors as I’m flooded with inspiration. I really need my space to cooperate with me, and be a place that I love to be in and create in. My current home office/studio space read more “storage space” than “creative haven.” I’d been meaning to tackle the little piles stacked everywhere for a while, and finally did over the weekend.
I didn’t take a “before” picture but I did take a “after-I-pulled-everything-out-and-before-I-put-it-back” picture
Here’s one of the closet partially emptied
To say this space is multi-purpose seems like an understatement. This room needs to be; a home office, a painting studio, an occasional photography studio, a gift wrapping room (just like Aaron Spelling had!), storage for all my office supplies, art supplies, props, painting gear, food styling gear, research materials, and christmas/other holiday decorations. Fortunately, I have my dad’s neat freak gene and I knew I’d be able to make it all make sense. The key to organization (which I am always telling The Hubs) is keep like items together.
Ahhhh, clean closet
My shelving system is roughly organized (left to right top shelf first) : Art supplies:painting, Misc dishes, white dishes, seasonal/decorative napkins and plates (I have the most random crap) (Second shelf) Art supplies:drawing, Glass dishes, plates by color, stationary/notecards. (Third shelf) Misc art supplies, notebooks/journals, linens:small, photography supplies. (Fourth shelf) binders of old photo negatives, stuff for our wedding album which I have yet to put together (I still plan to!), linens:large, gift wrap:bows, ribbon, tape etc.
I chose each shelf for each item based on what I access the most.
The side of the closet has another shelving system where I put all my office supplies. The Hubs gave me an old bucket to keep my gift wrap in.
The bookshelf is stocked with inspiration including books, magazines, photos of friends, family and places I’ve traveled to.
My painting area is now clean and bright. I was able to hang some artwork that had been sitting on the floor for a while including a painting my Grandma did. We rent our house so to protect the wood floors from my VERY messy painting habits, I lay down a tarp then cover that with old throw rugs we don’t use anymore. I think it makes it kind of fun, like those rugs you had in kindergarten with all the letters and number on them.
Lastly, my home office. I wanted to make sure my back wasn’t to the door because that is bad feng shui. (Hey, it can’t hurt) For all you who I instant message with all day long, this is where i’m sitting. Usually in my bathrobe and slippers. (Ha, ha yes, that is my BFA on the wall. Just to make it more “officey”) I have all the pictures of my nieces, nephews and my friend’s kids taped up so I see their sweet faces every day. Living far away, I really miss them. Thank god for skype.
Well that’s it! Looks like a fun place to hang out now, right? I’m excited to get started on my new painting that I’ve been dreaming about for months. I’m going to see my parents in Chicago in a couple of weeks, and I know they are giving me my Grandma’s easel, so that will be a nice addition to my space. I’m also looking forward to many more recipes and food photo projects in the upcoming weeks. Hope you stay tuned and join me!
