Summer is really heating up and my bestie and fitness expert, Valerie, is back with another tip on how to keep up/work on that healthy lifestyle you’ve been after. Val is an avid runner and her tip this month is something that I really need to pay more attention to. Take it away Val!

Stretching is tremendously important for your body, regardless of your fitness level, yet it’s likely the most overlooked step in your workout. I’ll admit it; I’m guilty of running double digit miles without so much as a toe-touch before, during, or after. The jury is still out on whether or not stretching prevents injury, but just 15 minutes of stretching a day will help improve flexibility, assist in correcting your posture, reduce muscle soreness, and aid in stress relief. Plus, stretching increases the blood flow and circulation throughout your body, resulting in more oxygen to your brain offering a clearer mind. You can start with a simple toe-touch, or find a yoga studio to learn from a certified instructor. There are countless resources for customized stretching routines – tailor one to your needs and make stretching your newest healthy habit.
Valerie could not be more on point with this tip. I often find myself forgetting to stretch, that is, until my body becomes all achy and knotted up. Stretching and working out do not need to go hand in hand. Stretching is great for EVERYONE to do, young and old, and I’ve found is especially helpful to those who sit at a desk all day. When it does occur to me to stretch, I find it to be tremendously beneficial not only to my physical body, but to my mental well being too. Try it today! Set aside 5 minutes to do some simple stretches and see how you feel.
