I posted this old photo on Instagram yesterday for #tbt (throw back Thursday) As a kid, we would spend every summer at our cabin in northern Minnesota, a 10-12 hour drive from our home in Chicago. We’d load up the station wagon, hitch the trailer, and hit the open road. We’d always make one stop in Minneapolis to see my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins (pictured), before arriving at our woodland home for the next 2 and a half months.
I was thinking of this the other day not only because my parents left for the cabin last week (in their retirement they usually go memorial day-ish and stay well past labor day), but also because I was thinking of all the traveling I’ve been doing lately. Its no station wagon road trip, but its been GREAT!
1. I realized that it is only June 7th, and so far this year I’ve been to Seattle, Kentucky, Dallas, Birmingham, Cabo, Chicago, New York, Vegas 2X, Sacramento, and Napa. I’ve witness weddings, met new babies, and celebrated birthdays. I’ve gotten to see every member of my immediate family including in-laws, nieces and nephews, and even my Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle and Cousin who I hadn’t seen in 4 years. I saw places I’ve never been before, and spent time with old friends. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to go and visit everyone I love. I really believe that traveling is the best way to spend your money, and if you have a little bit of money to spare, I encourage everyone to take that trip you’ve been thinking about! It doesn’t have to be exotic. Just pack up the car and get out and see the world. The memories you gain will last a lifetime.
2. On the flip side, I have been looking forward to this weekend for weeks! For the first time in ages, The Hubs and I will both be home at the same time, and we have NOTHING to do! I’m so excited to sleep in (dog permitting), read, lay out by the pool, watch movies, and generally be lazy. I’ve got lots of cooking ideas that I’m sure I’ll experiment with, but other than that it should be very mellow and relaxing. Everyone needs down time in their lives (especially The Hubs) and I’m grateful that ours is coming at just the right time.
3. Life has been busy lately! I’ve got so many projects in the works sometimes my head spins just thinking about it all. I was reflecting on some of my life choices the other day, and I realized that starting this blog, and choosing a creative path in my life was the best decision I’ve ever made. Sure I struggle with all kinds of things…..following your heart isn’t always easy, but weeks like this where I get to work with great people on interesting projects make it all worth it.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! Its June gloom here (a good thing for my lazy weekend), but I hope your weekend is filled with sunshine and summer cheer! Be sure to take a moment to recognize the Great things happening in your life. I promise you it will make your weekend that much better.
