Oh man I love apple season. BIG FAN! Apples are so “fall”. I guess if i’m going to get into the fall spirit I might as well bust out some baking with apples. Thanks to Henry’s 88 cent per pound pricing, we have a TON to bake with (although I’m thinking while writing this that I would really like to go to an orchard and pick my own….will google soon)
Today’s apple dessert, Caramel Apple Bars….yes, they are as good as they sound.
I have a folder on my desktop in which I keep recipes I find online to make at a later date. Caramel Apple Bars were one of those recipes. I thought I had all the stuff to make them but after reviewing the recipe I realized I didn’t have any shortening. Not like I want to ingest shortening anyway. I googled around to try to find a similar recipe that doesn’t contain shortening and found this on one of my fave websites, yumsugar.com
I didn’t have the stuff to make the caramel sauce (namely cream) so I just diced up a bunch of soft caramel candies and sprinkled them around before putting the crumble topping on. The Hubs ate 3 in a row exclaiming “oh man, these are really, really good. Sooooo good” I think we have a shortening free winner here folks!
