8 years ago, around this time, my college roommate and forever bestie, Val, and I decided we had enough midwest to last a lifetime. After one last wild summer at the University of Illinois, we packed up my little Nissan Sentra and hit the road heading west, to California. I personally had never been west of the Mississippi river at this point, never to California, and we didn’t know anyone who lived there or didn’t have a job lined up. But we did have a little money saved up, a plan (with many backup plans) and a positive attitude.
Long story short, we convinced someone to rent us an apartment (without a job and without a current permanent address) found jobs and busted our asses for years to get where we are today. Along the way, we have had the most fun I could ever possibly imagine having, and met wonderful friends who have become like a family to us. We’ve seen forest fires, earthquakes, people move into town, move away, get married, get divorced, get a dog, have babies, change jobs, travel abroad…….pretty much everything.
I truly consider San Diego my home and I know moving here was the best decision I ever made. Opening myself up to new and unfamiliar possibilities turned out to have the greatest payoff ever. I really believe that you are responsible for creating your own happiness in your life, and pretty much anything can be achieved with confidence, hard work and a whole lot of positivity.
Happy anniversary to us San Diego (and Val) Its truly been the best years of my life!
