Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cookie butter
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • powdered sugar for garnish

Instructions

  1. Begin heating vegetable oil in a pot over medium high heat. Watch it carefully until it reaches 300 degrees.
  2. Meanwhile sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, sugar, melted butter and vanilla extract. Add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring with a large spoon until a dough forms.
  4. Using a small cookie scoop (donut holes will puff as they cook) scoop out 2-3 donut holes at a time, frying for 2-3 minutes. Flipping at least once to ensure even cooking
  5. **NOTE: Consistent oil temperature is key. It might take a couple of test tries to get your cooking time exactly right. Pay close attention to the oil temp and the cooking time to ensure even cooking.
  6. One finished, remove with a slotted spoon and let drain on a paper towel. Cool completely.
  7. Fill a pastry bag with cookie butter

  8. Poke a hole in each donut hole with the tip of the pastry bag, and fill with cookie butter. Dust with powdered sugar to garnish.
