Ultimate Sweet and Spicy Healthy Snack Mix

July 24, 2010 By betsy 5 Comments

This ultimate sweet and spicy healthy snack mix recipe is a great snack on the go.

I’m in the midst of a lifetime love affair with chips. I would forever choose a handful of tortilla chips over a cookie. The problem is that I’m never able to stop once I start. I try to only eat chips at parties or on vacation and focus the majority of my snacking on healthier options.

A lot of snack foods (chips, crackers etc.)  are highly processed, full of chemicals and provide no nutritional benefits whatsoever. I know there are new, all natural, baked and 100 calorie options for chips these days but those are usually very expensive. I always prefer to make as much of the food I consume from scratch that way I always know what I’m REALLY eating plus, its much more cost effective.

I saw this recipe for a spicy snack mix and knew I had to try it. At Henry’s, my local grocery store, they have bulk bins of nuts so I only had to buy as much as I needed.

Whoa! This stuff is super addicting. The Hubs and I polished off an entire batch, and I had to go back to Henry’s, get more ingredients, and make another batch to pack as part of the picnic dinner we’ll take tomorrow when we go to watch the Sunday concert in the park by our house. It’s great to know exactly what’s in my snack, but it’s even better to find something healthy that’s just as satisfying as a handful of tortilla chips!

I found it interesting when you said I’m aware that there are new, all-natural, baked, and 100-calorie chip choices available these days, but they’re typically very pricey. I used to think differently about it not until you explained it briefly and it really got my attention. What you said about snack seasoning was really interesting to me.
